Museum #1: RISD
- Race Riot by Andy Warhol
- 1964
- Oil and Silkscreen on Canvas
- 30 x 32 inches
- This piece displays two policeman sending a K9 after an african american man at a protest
- This piece has a lot of texture in it due to the canvas. It creates a very worn look across the piece. The harsh contrast makes the image very eye catching and bold.
- The movement of the dog and the person create room for your eye to move around the piece.
- This piece is made to invoke anger and concern for the situation being displayed. It tells a story by having clear aspects of identity and oppression by who is the victim and who is the perpetrator of the violence.
- This piece is historically important due to the political message behind it and how it brings awareness to the racism problem and police brutality problem in america. I enjoy Andy Warhol's works because of their strong designs and sometimes underlying political messages.
Museum #2: MoMA
- U.S. 97, South of Klamath Falls, Oregon, July 21, 1973 by Stephen Shore
- 1973
- Chromogenic color print
- 17 x 21 inches
- This piece's subject is a billboard with a mountain view placed in a grassy field on the side of the highway
- This photograph has a very textured element in it due to the grass, a fluffiness of the clouds, and the roughness of the concrete. The colors in this piece are very strong due to the bright blues and greens.
- The clouds in the sky creates natural lines that attract your eye to the billboard. The billboard itself is an excellent display of unity because it blends in almost seamlessly to its surroundings. At the same time this small difference between the billboard and the surrounding area makes the setting itself create a very unique frame around the subject.
- I love this photograph because of the luck behind it. The chances that the sky, and the point of view would be so perfect so as to make this roadside advertisement blend in like camouflage is very slim and makes the image a one of a kind.
Artist Hero #1: William Eggleston
- Analyzing "Trophy Picture" by William Eggleston
- 1968
- Film
- Trophies displayed on top of a cigarette dispenser in front of a blue background
- Color is a strong element in this piece with the cool blue background contrasted by the warm golden brown tones and orange pieces of the dispenser. The subject is centered but you can see different eye catching levels in the subject due to the placement of trophies and their individual heights.
- The balance of this photograph is maintained because its centered and the unity is maintained through the uniform style of the trophies and the orange details
- I like this photo for the gain of the film and the overall design of the blue mixed with the warm tones. This photo evokes a nostalgic or calm emotion.
Artist Hero #2: Tara Wray
- Untitled by Tara Wray
- 2011
- Digital media
- A dog sitting outside in the cold
- The dogs expression and pose in this photograph is a very strong element because it creates the message behind the image. The solitude of the subject against the almost white background adds to the emotion of the image as well.
- The dog is centered in this photograph and the background is filled with mostly shades of white and greys creating a very distant and lonesome atmosphere. The dog itself is a dark color with evidence of aging across its face. The monochrome element of this photograph complements the dogs lonesome expression by providing the absence of bright, vibrant colors. The cloudy sky allows viewers to believe the dog is alone in the cold.
- This photo encompasses the pain of aging, and the solitude of growing old. Viewers can visibly see the thought process of the dog, and relate to his emotions because the process of growing old and being stripped of youth is a struggle across species.
- I love this piece entirely for the dogs expression. When people think about dogs, they envision a youthful dog with love for live bounding through fields and chasing after tennis balls. I feel as if people searching for dogs forget that when they adopt a puppy, that puppy will soon grow old and loose the energy and independence it once had. Due to this occurrence, I feel like this photo can serve a purpose for awareness of the inevitability of aging pets and alert pet owners that adopting a puppy is a life-long commitment.
Artist Hero #3: Cig Harvey
- Square Knot by Cig Harvey
- 2004
- Digital Media
- 1:1 square ratio
- A woman in a yellow dress and green roller skates laying on a tennis court
- Color is a key element in this photograph as the same shade of green is displayed throughout the entire photograph with the exception of the colors yellow and white. Space is another very strong element in this photograph due to the fact that the subject takes of so little space in the image. The lines of the tennis court creates a unique framing around the woman.
- This photo is very asymmetrical and brings your eye to the upper right hand corner of the photograph due to both the subjects placement and the lines.
- This photograph is very abstract because of the contrast between the location and the roller skates. The overall mood of this piece is very strange and oddly humorous due to the random aspect of it and the models positioning.
- I like this piece due to the bold color choice and the color coordination of the shoes and the tennis court .
